It has nothing to do with the Arma dei Carabinieri but, who knows, they might have used it. The Carabiner clip looks like a simple metallic device but it's been a powerful tool. The carabiner was first used, and got its name, from carbine guns, which used a spring-loaded gate. During World War II the first aluminum carabiners were produced (steel carabiners were produced long before this). The first lightweight carabiner produced for the outdoor industry in the United States. It was made by Yvon Chouinard, around 1957. This carabiner is an "S" shape and has two opposing gates, one on each end. The unique, double-clip design made by Nite Ize makes it easy to connect two things together, like your canteen and a backpack strap or loop. There are many practical and creative uses for this ominously obscure fastener clip.
